Cost

Freeview is free beyond the TV Licence, but limited to around 70 standard channels and a handful in HD. Cable and satellite packages typically start around £30 a month and can pass £100 with premium bundles, and most rise each April. IPTV sits in between — a 12-month IPTV UK Fast plan works out at well under £10 a month with no annual price rise. See our current prices.

Channels & content

Freeview covers the main public-service channels. Cable and satellite add premium entertainment, film and sport channels for an extra fee. IPTV services combine live channels, catch-up and a large on-demand library in one app — see our channel line-up for what is included.

Picture quality

Freeview HD tops out at 1080i on a small number of channels. Satellite and cable offer HD widely, with 4K on premium tiers. IPTV quality depends on your broadband: with 25 Mbps you can enjoy 4K. Read what speed you need.

Installation & flexibility

Freeview needs a working aerial, which can be a problem in flats or areas with poor reception. Satellite needs a dish (and sometimes landlord permission), and cable is only available in certain postcodes. IPTV just needs broadband — making it ideal for renters, students and anyone who moves often. It also works on phones and tablets, so you can watch in the garden or on holiday in the UK.

The verdict

  • Choose Freeview if you only watch the main channels and want to pay nothing extra.
  • Choose cable or satellite if you want a single bundled bill with broadband and phone, and don’t mind a contract.
  • Choose IPTV if you want lots of choice, 4K, multi-device viewing and no contract — at a fraction of the price.

Many households combine Freeview with IPTV. The easiest way to decide? Try IPTV free first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use IPTV and Freeview together?

Yes. Plenty of UK households keep their aerial for Freeview and add IPTV for extra choice and on-demand content.

Is IPTV cheaper than satellite or cable TV?

Typically yes. A year of IPTV UK Fast costs less than two or three months of many premium cable or satellite bundles.

Do I need a satellite dish for IPTV?

No. IPTV works entirely over your broadband — no dish, aerial or cable line required.
